Alleluia Verse

Alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful, and kindle in them the fire of your love. Alleluia.

                                     Liturgical Text

Prayer Before Service…O Holy Spirit, Fire of faith, come to us needy vessels and fill us with the mercy and grace from heaven that we need to live in this dying world. Give us that life in Christ through the gifts of Word and Sacrament that we may be living witness of our Savior and the salvation that is ours in Him; through the same Jesus Christ, who with You and the Father is one God, world without end. Amen.

“Pentecost Sunday”

Opening Hymn  LSB # 497   “Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord”

1              Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord,
With all Your graces now outpoured
On each believer’s mind and heart;
Your fervent love to them impart.
Lord, by the brightness of Your light
In holy faith Your Church unite;
From ev’ry land and ev’ry tongue
This to Your praise, O Lord, our God, be sung:
Alleluia, alleluia!

2              Come, holy Light, guide divine,
Now cause the Word of life to shine.
Teach us to know our God aright
And call Him Father with delight.
From ev’ry error keep us free;
Let none but Christ our master be
That we in living faith abide,
In Him, our Lord, with all our might confide.
Alleluia, alleluia!

3              Come, holy Fire, comfort true,
Grant us the will Your work to do
And in Your service to abide;
Let trials turn us not aside.
Lord, by Your pow’r prepare each heart,
And to our weakness strength impart
That bravely here we may contend,
Through life and death to You, our Lord, ascend.
Alleluia, alleluia!

P: As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds  His people,

C: from this time forth and forevermore.

P: Those who trust in the Lord are like Mount Zion,

C: which cannot be moved, but abides forever.

P: As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds  His people,

C: from this time forth and forevermore.

P: For the scepter of wickedness shall not rest on the land allotted to the righteous,

C: lest the righteous stretch out their hands to do wrong.

P: Do good, O Lord, to those who are good,

C: and to those who are upright in their hearts!

P: But those who turn aside to their crooked ways the Lord will lead  away with evildoers!

C: Peace be upon Israel!

Glory be to the Father and to the Son  and to the Holy Spirit;

as it was in the beginning,  is now, and will be forever. Amen.

P: As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the Lord surrounds His people,

C: from this time forth and forevermore.

Epistle   Acts 2:1-21

Gospel  John 7:37-39

Sermon Hymn   LSB # 498    “Come, Holy Ghost, Creator Blest”

1              Come, Holy Ghost, Creator blest,
And make our hearts Your place of rest;
Come with Your grace and heav’nly aid,
And fill the hearts which You have made.

2              To You, the Counselor, we cry,
To You, the gift of God Most High;
The fount of life, the fire of love,
The soul’s anointing from above.

3              In You, with graces sevenfold,
We God’s almighty hand behold
While You with tongues of fire proclaim
To all the world His holy name.

4              Your light to ev’ry thought impart,
And shed Your love in ev’ry heart;
The weakness of our mortal state
With deathless might invigorate.

5              Drive far away our wily foe,
And Your abiding peace bestow;
With You as our protecting guide,
No evil can with us abide.

6              Teach us to know the Father, Son,
And You, from both, as Three in One
That we Your name may ever bless
And in our lives the truth confess.

7              Praise we the Father and the Son
And Holy Spirit, with them One,
And may the Son on us bestow
The gifts that from the Spirit flow! Amen.

Closing Hymn  LSB # 496  “Holy Spirit, Light Divine”

1              Holy Spirit, light divine,
Shine upon this heart of mine;
Chase the shades of night away,
Turn the darkness into day.

2              Let me see my Savior’s face,
Let me all His beauties trace;
Show those glorious truths to me
Which are only known to Thee.

3              Holy Spirit, pow’r divine,
Cleanse this guilty heart of mine;
In Thy mercy pity me,
From sin’s bondage set me free.

4              Holy Spirit, joy divine,
Cheer this saddened heart of mine;
Yield a sacred, settled peace,
Let it grow and still increase.

5              Holy Spirit, all divine,
Dwell within this heart of mine;
Cast down ev’ry idol throne,
Reign supreme, and reign alone.

Prayer at ClosingLord Jesus Christ, You promised the Holy Spirit as living water to Your disciples. As the Spirit has come to us here and fed us with the gifts of grace, send us guided by Him each and every day out into our needy, grace-starved world, that we clearly and boldly declare Your praises in and through the Gospel of life. Hear us as we pray in Your name. Amen.

Lutherans for Life… May 31 “There are no clues we can assemble, no plot we can reason out, to understand how our great God is the thrice holy Three in One. We can only confess as we do in the creeds: ‘I believe.’ The Triune God who exists apart from time acted in time and history in Christ to save us. For that mystery we will give thanks and praise to our Triune God for all eternity, joining the saints and angels in endless praise: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come!’ (Revelation 4:8b).” Dr. Carol Geisler
